With the Dallas Mavericks' decision to trade Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards in a blockbuster deal on Wednesday, the book has been closed on the 2025 Luka Doncic trade -- and as expected, it doesn't make for great reading if you're a Mavericks fan.
One year and three days ago, the Mavs shocked the sports world by dealing five-time All-NBA guard Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick. In trading the 10-time All-Star Davis to Washington on Wednesday, Dallas received two more first-round picks -- one of which only conveys if it is between 21st and 30th overall -- as well as an additional second round pick and a package of four players.

In exchange for Doncic, the Mavericks have received five players:
Christie
Khris Middleton
AJ Johnson
Malaki Branham
Marvin Bagley III
The accrued draft capital consists of mostly second-round picks, along with the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2026 first and the Golden State Warriors' protected 2030 first.
So the Mavericks turned Luka Doncic into
Max Christie
2029 Lakers first-round pick
2026 Thunder pick (30th)
2030 Warriors first (if 21-30)
3 seconds
Generational fumble

In all, it is an extremely disappointing return for a generational guard in Doncic. Back in November, the fallout from this deal -- combined with the Mavericks' 3-9 start -- cost general manager Nico Harrison his job.
But at least Dallas fans can enjoy watching ascendant franchise player and presumptive Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg continue to excel.
