Spurs' Devin Vassell gets honest about NBA trade deadline

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell got brutally honest about how the NBA trade deadline affects players.

Vassell told the San Antonio Express-News that he's ready for the trade deadline to end.

"It's a stressful time not only for you, but for players that you might know, teammates that you might know," Vassell said. "I can't wait for this trade deadline to be over."

Vassell is having another impressive season, averaging 14.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He's shooting 42.5% from the field and 36.9% from three. He returned to the lineup on Jan. 25 after missing 13 games with a groin injury.

He's in the second season of a five-year, $165 million contract extension he signed in Oct. 2023. He's under contract through the 2028-29 season.

Vassell hasn't been mentioned in trade rumors at the deadline but could be a candidate to be moved if the Spurs ramp up their pursuit of Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

He was selected No. 11 overall by San Antonio in the 2020 NBA Draft. Vassell has spent his entire six-year career with the Spurs and has averaged 10+ points in each of the past five seasons.

He had a breakout season in the 2022-23, averaging 18.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists. Vassell followed with a career-best season the next year, posting 19.5 points and 4.1 assists in 68 games.

He's been a terrific player development story for the Spurs and has fit nicely with their core of Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle.
