On a memorable that saw Manchester City secure a return to Wembley after beating Newcastle 3-1 – 5-1 on aggregate – to reach the Carabao Cup final, the absence of Bernardo was a blot on events.

The Portuguese was forced off late in our Premier League trip to Tottenham a few days earlier and despite the injury, the boss said he tried to play a part against the Magpies.

Despite his efforts, Guardiola believes he is in a battle to be fit for the clash at Anfield on Sunday 8 February at 16:30 (UK).

Asked if Bernado could play, Guardiola said: “I don’t know.

“Bernardo is special. We’ll see. Yesterday he said he felt quite good and ‘I want to try’.

“I don’t know. Of course in a position that is less dangerous than I would say the hamstring. It’s another type of muscle in his back but we’ll see in the next days.

“‘Could be okay’ is not the words. He’s an incredible doubt. Knowing him he will try but right now I don’t know.”
