Chelsea nearly replaced Diego Costa with one of South America's greatest ever strikers in 2017 - journalist

Diego Costa played a key role in Chelsea winning the Premier League in the 2016/17 season, their last title triumph.

During that campaign, Costa scored 20 goals in 35 top-flight appearances. Two years prior to that, the striker also netted 20 times as Chelsea went on to finish first in that season as well.

However, all of that did not stop Antonio Conte from getting rid of the Brazilian-born footballer after a breakdown in their relationship.

Drogba or Henry? Only ONE won a Champions League while in England…

Costa gave his answer 💙

Chelsea went on to replace him with Alvaro Morata and targeted Romelu Lukaku before the Spaniard’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, but they were also interested in someone else.

Sergio Aguero to Chelsea was ‘99.9%’ done

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero recently revealed in an interview that he was very close to joining Chelsea to replace the outgoing Costa in 2017.

Since then, journalist Simon Phillips has revealed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the Argentine’s transfer to the Blues was “99.9%” done.

Unfortunately for Conte, City cancelled the deal and Aguero returned to the Etihad, helping Pep Guardiola’s men to win the 2017/18 Premier League title.

Chelsea won the 2018 FA Cup final, beating City’s rivals Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley, but that campaign proved to be a disastrous one overall.

Conte fell out with David Luiz, failed to secure Champions League qualification and was eventually sacked. Who knows what the outcome would have been, though, had Aguero replaced Costa instead of Morata.

Chelsea have targeted Sergio Aguero on more than one occasion

The 2017 summer transfer window is not the only time Chelsea have shown interest in Aguero.

The former Argentina international first came onto their radar as an Atletico Madrid player in 2009 after scoring two goals against them in the Champions League.

The big-money striker Chelsea eventually went on to sign was Fernando Torres. But between that and his masterclass against the Blues, it was well-documented that Aguero had been a target.

Finishing his career with more than 300 goals to his name, Aguero is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever centre-forwards to come out of South America.
