Eddie Howe issues Anthony Gordon injury update

Next up for Newcastle is Brentford at St James’ Park on Saturday (5:30pm kick-off) with Gordon officially a doubt for the match.

“Looks like a hamstring problem, I don't quite know how bad it is,” Howe said the defeat at the Etihad. “It was enough for him to come off, so that's a worry.”

Gordon is the latest player to be added to Newcastle’s list of injury concerns with Lewis Miley and Bruno Guimaraes also doubts for the weekend with respective knee and ankle issues.

Tino Livramento, Joelinton, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth are also out due to injury.

And Newcastle’s mounting injury concerns were part of Howe’s thinking when he made changes in the second half.

Eddie Howe explains NUFC substitutions amid Lewis Hall & Joe Willock concerns

Lewis Hall, Joe Willock and Nick Woltemade all came off at half-time, while Kieran Trippier was replaced in the closing stages.

“Definitely with Lewis and Joe Willock, that was very much the thinking, because Lewis hasn't had a rest, he's been one that we'd have loved to have taken out at certain stages during this recent run of games that we've had,” Howe admitted.

“We just felt that this was the right time to do it, to make sure that we can keep him at his best level in the next games coming up.

“I think he's done really well to play the number that he has. Same with Kieran, we're trying to protect Kieran, as we did at the end.

“There are other players that we're trying to manage, and obviously, with the number of injuries we've got, we can't do that as much as we would like, and that's where any injury to any player is a really detrimental factor.”
