Zeki Celik stance on playing at Anfield as Liverpool interest in Roma star emerges

Liverpool may need to strengthen their backline once more when the 2026 summer transfer window rolls around.

Jeremy Jacquet has agreed to join the Reds recently and will link up with his new club on July 1.

However, there could be more holes that need to be filled in Arne Slot’s backline in the coming months.

Conor Bradley could be out until 2027, which would see him miss the first half of 2026/27.

Elsewhere, there have been suggestions that Joe Gomez could leave before next season gets underway.

Now, we have seen Liverpool linked with a move for AS Roma defender Zeki Celik.

Zeki Celik wants to play at Anfield

Marco Conterio has provided an update on the defender and the Reds’ interest this week on X/Twitter.

He wrote: “Roma must make a renewal offer to Zeki Celik: the Turk has prioritized the renewal and the Giallorossi club, but he’s already had several inquiries, including #Liverpool.”

Celik is due to become a free agent at the end of June, meaning the Merseyside outfit could agree a pre-contract with the player right now.

Whether that happens remains to be seen, but should he end up joining Liverpool, the versatile Roma defender would fulfil a wish.

Speaking to Yenicagri in December 2025, Celik asked about the stadiums he would like to play in and named Anfield among them.

He said: “I have followed the Spanish League closely since I was a child. I played in France and Italy, but I couldn’t play in Spain. I played a match at Chelsea’s stadium in England. I would always like to play in the stadiums of Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.”

Zeki Celik would solve two Liverpool problems

As fans are well aware, Liverpool’s backline has lacked depth for much of this season.

And with Bradley potentially out for another year and Gomez possibly leaving, that issue isn’t going away.

However, signing Celik would allow the Reds to bring in cover for two positions.

The 28-year-old is a natural right-back, playing 161 career games in said role.

But he is also a competent central defender, making 33 appearances in the middle of defence during his career, including on 10 occasions in the current campaign.
