Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has outlined why the Reds snapped up Jeremy Jacquet on deadline day, with an $82 million (£60 million) swoop to beat Chelsea to the 20-year-old center-back.
Chelsea and clubs around Europe are understood to have held an interest in Jacquet. However, he chose Liverpool as the best next step in his career, with Rennes insistent that he wouldn't be leaving France until the summer.
"Very pleasing," Slot said of the deal in his press conference before taking on Manchester City this weekend. "He is a very big talent and maybe even more than a talent, but we say that because of his age.

"We weren't the only ones interested in him so it is a big compliment to those who are signing the players.
"It is another example of the model we use at this club: young, talented at the start of their careers, and can improve and help us for short and definitely long term. We have signed a lot of those recently and the mid to long-term future is in as very good place."
Jacquet is a French youth international and will arrive in a few months. As things stand, Ibrahima Konate will be leaving as a free agent, meaning the center-back position was a major priority to address.
"I am honored to sign for Liverpool, one of the greatest football institutions in the world," he said, in a statement released by Rennes after the transfer was announced.
"It was also very important for me to finish my time in red and black on a high, at my boyhood club, the club of my heart. I'm approaching this second half of the season with the desire to experience some great moments with my team-mates and the fans."
