Liverpool Have Made An Approach To Sign Turkish International On A Free Transfer - Report

Liverpool have made an offer to Roma fullback Zeki Celik, according to reports in the Italian media.

Tuttomercatoweb claim that the Turkish international has received several “proposals” from other clubs, including the Merseysiders. His contract expires in June and he can already sign a pre-agreement with a foreign team ahead of a free transfer this summer.

The Reds are said to be the club who are pushing the most to secure Celik’s signature, but the defender has made staying at Roma his priority.

Even so, the Giallorossi have not offered him a contract extension yet, and there is a chance he will accept an offer from another team if negotiations don’t start soon.

Why would Liverpool sign the defender?

Celik is a right-back, and it appears as if Conor Bradley will spend an extended spell on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

Some experts have suggested that the Northern Ireland international may not only miss the rest of the season, but he may be unavailable for the whole calendar year.

That means a short-term addition on a free, like Celik, would make a lot of sense.

Celik is not the only Serie A right-back who has been targeted

Before the transfer window closed, it was revealed by trusted sources that the Reds had made enquiries for Denzel Dumfries.

His club, Inter Milan, were, however, unwilling to let the Netherlands international go on loan, but it could be something that’s revisited in the summer.

Dumfries has a release clause (worth around €25m/£22m) which wasn’t valid in January but will become active at the end of the season. Due to the low-cost nature of such a deal, sporting director Richard Hughes may be tempted to make a move for him, especially if Celik is not willing to make the switch to Anfield.
