The Golden State Warriors finally put the Jonathan Kuminga saga to rest on Wednesday, but they may not be done making moves ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole, the Warriors are keeping their phone lines open and could still make a move, even after giving up on the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes by moving on from Kuminga.
“The Warriors, according to sources, have not completely shut off their phones,” Poole wrote on Wednesday night. “They continue to ponder other potential moves before the NBA trade deadline at noon Thursday.”
Warriors Trade Deadline Plans
While Poole’s report didn’t specify the Warriors’ exact plans, one wonders whether they could resume their pursuit of New Orleans Pelicans wing Trey Murphy III, now that they’re out of the Giannis trade market. It was previously noted that the Pelicans seek two to three unprotected first-round picks for Murphy, one of the best sharpshooting wings in the league. However, the Warriors reportedly had reservations about parting with such a massive haul amid their all-out Giannis trade pursuit.
With the acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis, the Warriors checked off a big item from their checklist by adding a rare shot-blocking big man who can also shoot from deep. However, they were initially said to be in the market for a 3-and-D wing to help Stephen Curry and the aging Warriors roster.
For what it’s worth, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported this week that the Pelicans don’t intend to lower the asking price on Trey Murphy III by Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.
“There is a very real possibility the Pelicans stick to their asking prices for all of their players through Thursday’s deadline and don’t make any moves,” Siegel wrote.
Warriors Out of Giannis Race
The Warriors could be forced to pivot to other wing upgrades after bowing out of the Giannis trade bidding war on Tuesday night. While they are reportedly open to moving both Moses Moody and Brandin Podziemski, they are unlikely to give up their precious post-Steph Curry era draft assets unless it’s for the right player. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr made that much clear last month, while citing the examples of teams in recent years who unsuccessfully used up most of their draft assets in pursuit of stars.
“All you have to do is look at some of these teams out there that have given up the world for a star player and now they’re looking around like the Clippers, no picks,” Kerr said on the “Tom Tolbert Show.” “Phoenix, no picks. Milwaukee, no picks.
“You can really paint yourself into a corner if you’re risky and irresponsible.”
The Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly the only two real suitors left in the Giannis trade bidding war ahead of the NBA trade deadline. All signs point to the Milwaukee Bucks holding onto their longtime franchise star until the offseason, when they’d be able to gauge offers from several other interested suitors. Even the Warriors could potentially get back in the mix during the summer.
