Celtic to arrange medical with former Liverpool man ahead of transfer

The winter transfer window may be officially shut, but the business between clubs is far from over. Across Europe, teams are still allowed to sign free agents who are either out of contract or have been released by their previous club. This means managers can still reshape their squads by adding experienced stop‑gaps, medical‑cover replacements, or short‑term boosters without paying a transfer fee.

It also opens the door for players who were released earlier in the season to find new homes, often on short‑term deals until the end of the campaign.

And it looks like Celtic are looking to take advantage, and are in advanced talks to sign former Liverpool man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain according to Sky Sports and could even sanction a medical as early as today

“Celtic are in advanced talks with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The Hoops are confident of completing the signing of the England international as a free agent,” reports Anthony Joseph.

“The 32-year-old could have a medical as early as today if a deal can be struck in the coming hours. ”

“Sky Sports News revealed Celtic’s interest in Oxlade-Chamberlain on Monday, with Celtic boss Martin O’Neill confirming that he’d held talks with the player in his press conference on Tuesday.”

“The former Arsenal midfielder has been training the Gunners in recent months following his departure from Besiktas last summer.”

Celtic boss Martin O’Neill confirmed the talks, saying earlier this week:

“He has trained at Arsenal for some time, since his time in Turkey. I would be very interested in doing it, but as I said, I am very surprised people haven’t taken him up closer to the area.”

“He was very excited by what we were saying, and he knows about the football club. (Former Celtic goalkeeper) Joe Hart has spoken to him – not on our behalf – but that was a conversation he had.”

The 32-year-old left Merseyside on a free transfer in 2023 after six injury-hit but trophy-laden seasons, where he lifted the Premier League, Champions League, and more while making 146 appearances. He quickly signed with Turkish giants Besiktas, netting five goals in 50 games over two campaigns despite fitness struggles. However, his contract was mutually terminated in late August 2025, and has been a free agent ever since
