Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic was delighted to sign Lewis Koumas at the second attempt after missing out on the Liverpool winger to Birmingham City in the summer.

The third-placed Tigers snapped up Koumas on loan until the end of the season a few days after Blues and Liverpool agreed to end his spell at St Andrew's.

Koumas was targeted by Hull during the summer transfer window but instead opted for Blues, possibly due to the transfer restrictions Jakirovic's side were working under.

“He’s Liverpool school, he’s a Liverpool winger, when I saw him in the summer, he was my wish, but he chose Birmingham," Jakirovic told Hull Live.

“This is normal, in that situation, you can choose a club in a better situation. But there is no ego from my side, I respect every player’s decision but now when we had the opportunity to take him I said immediately we must take him.

“He’s so young, such big potential with a lot of experience in this league and especially in the January transfer period, there is no adaptation and I think he helps us.

“I think he can help us a lot. He’s a young player but he played in Stoke, now in Birmingham and this is the reason we took him immediately. I think he can improve this group a lot.”

Koumas enjoyed the perfect start to his Hull career with a winning goal on his debut against Blackburn but the 20-year-old Wales international wasn't able to inspire the Tigers to a win over Watford on Tuesday.

In-form Hull are now leading the chase for the automatic promotion places behind Coventry City and Middlesbrough.
