Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic has disclosed that Lewis Koumas was among his priority signings during the summer window, expressing his satisfaction at finally bringing the Liverpool prospect on board.

Koumas initially chose Birmingham City in the summer, despite the club being hit with a transfer embargo by the EFL, but following an inconsistent opening half to the season, he made the switch to the Tigers towards the end of last month.

The Liverpool loanee's influence was felt straight away, entering as a substitute and finding the net just four minutes later to secure a 1-0 victory at Blackburn last Saturday in front of a substantial away contingent, before making his home bow from the bench on Tuesday in City's scoreless stalemate with Watford.

Toby Collyer, similarly to Koumas, was also on the radar during the summer before his move to West Brom, eventually arriving ahead of the weekend trip to Ewood Park.

Jakirovic acknowledges why the Welsh international winger opted for St. Andrew's over the MKM Stadium at the start of the campaign.

"He's Liverpool school, he's a Liverpool winger, when I saw him in the summer, he was my wish, but he chose Birmingham," Jakirovic told Hull Live.

"This is normal. In that situation, you can choose a club in a better situation.

"But there is no ego from my side, I respect every player's decision, but now, when we had the opportunity to take him, I said immediately we must take him.

"He's so young, such big potential with a lot of experience in this league, and especially in the January transfer period, there is no adaptation, and I think he helps us.

"I think he can help us a lot. He's a young player, but he played in Stoke, now in Birmingham, and this is the reason we took him immediately.

"I think he can improve this group a lot."

Koumas joined Liverpool's academy from Tranmere in 2016 and made his debut for the first team in an FA Cup game during the 2023-24 season. He was on the bench for the 2024 Carabao Cup final victory against Chelsea, earning a winners' medal.

The 20-year-old, who is the son of former Premier League star Jason Koumas, spent last season on loan at Stoke, scoring three goals in 43 Championship appearances.

He's already played for Wales' senior team, earning nine caps to date.
