Tottenham make new move to save million on 'club legend' signing

Tottenham came close to securing a deal to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool in the January transfer window, for a fee that was believed to be in the region of £5million.

Spurs had initially planned to sign the Liverpool full-back on a free transfer in the summer after his current Reds deal expired at the end of the 2025/26 season.

However, they decided to move up their timeline after being given indications they could get a deal done in January for a small fee, with Liverpool not standing in the Scottish international's way if he wanted to leave the club.

Andy Robertson Will Be On Spurs' Transfer Wishlist In The Summer

That move relied on Liverpool being able to bring in a replacement, with Kostas Tsimikas lined up to be recalled from his loan spell with Roma early. However, the Reds could not get someone else in and backed out of the deal.

GIVEMESPORT understands Spurs will return for Robertson in the summer and the Athletic have backed that up in their Deal Sheet piece that "Robertson will likely still be a target" and that "Tottenham may revisit the situation in the summer".

It could work in Tottenham's favour, given Robertson, who has been described as a "club legend" by the Athletic's Liverpool reporter Andy Jones, will be a free agent by then, with his current contract ending and they can save £5million in fees.

They may still have to pay the £5million, however, after it emerged that Liverpool could offer Robertson a new deal to stay at Anfield. It would not necessarily be a contract to make him stay, more future-proofing from Liverpool to ensure they get a transfer fee for the left-back who would be entering his tenth year with the club.

Other Signings Tottenham Want To Make

Yan Diomande

There are other areas of the pitch that Spurs, whether under Thomas Frank or another manager, will look to make additions to their squad too. Tottenham wanted to sign a defensive midfielder a left-sided attacker and a striker in the January transfer window, but did not bring any of those in, despite plenty of talks.

The Athletic report: "Spurs will look again for a starting wide attacker, and [Yan] Diomande and Savinho could remain on their list of potential signings.

"In midfield, Tottenham are likely to look again for positive, passing central midfielders. They may also look to strengthen in the goalkeeping department after a particularly difficult winter period for Guglielmo Vicario."
