BBC reveal result of Liverpool-Aston Villa talks over Harvey Elliott situation

Harvey Elliott finds himself stuck in what can only be described as a nightmare scenario at Aston Villa, with the 22-year-old facing the prospect of sitting on the sidelines until the summer.

What was supposed to be a career-defining loan move has turned into a cautionary tale of transfer clauses gone wrong. Elliott joined Villa on deadline day last summer with high hopes of regular football, having been named Player of the Tournament at the U21 European Championships. The deal included an obligation for Villa to pay Liverpool around £35 million should he make just 10 appearances.

That clause has become his undoing. Villa boss Unai Emery has made it abundantly clear he won’t trigger it.

An MLS escape route emerged with Charlotte FC showing interest, but Elliott reportedly had no appetite for crossing the Atlantic at this stage of his career.

There were also reports in and around deadline day that both Villa and Liverpool opened dialogue to try and iron out the issue. But unfortunately for Elliott, it seems no agreement was struck with the BBC reporting as much:

“In the light of his limited game time and Emery’s often brutal honesty about his lack of interest in signing him, Liverpool and Villa discussed altering the agreement in recent days,” Nick Mashiter reported.

“However they failed to find a solution. And Emery has suggested he is not for turning.”

“Liverpool’s stance is that it is Villa’s issue to solve. They have budgeted for the transfer fee and having Elliott’s wages covered.”

“The prospect of him returning to Anfield remains remote and while manager Arne Slot has been criticised for what has been perceived as a cold approach to a loaned player struggling for game time, Liverpool feel they effectively sold Elliott last summer.”

Elliott now faces the grim reality of potentially training without playing meaningful minutes until summer. Liverpool have shown no willingness to absorb the costs of bringing him back early, viewing it as Villa’s problem to solve
