Scouts spotted: Arsenal now showing genuine interest in major European club's "machine"

Arsenal are now showing interest in signing a Borussia Dortmund "machine" in the summer transfer window, following a scouting mission.

Gunners' summer plans taking shape

With the Gunners well-stocked in all areas and in a strong position to win the Premier League title, they may not need to do much business this summer, but The Athletic's James McNicholas has suggested bringing in a younger central midfielder could be on the agenda.

McNicholas said: "Arsenal face the difficult task of improving an already impressive squad. After signing Martin Zubimendi, who turned 27 this week, and Norgaard, 32 next month, in the summer, they may look to introduce a younger profile into their midfield.

That said, it could be difficult to displace Declan Rice and Zubimendi in the starting XI, given that they have struck up quite the partnership, which has meant Christian Norgaard has received just 31 minutes of game time in the Premier League this season.

Another position in which Mikel Arteta has plenty of options is left-back, with the likes of Riccardo Calafiori, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Piero Hincapie all able to play on that side, but the north Londoners have now set their sights on another player in that area.

That is according to a report from BILD (via Sport Witness), which states Arsenal are now showing interest in a summer move for Borussia Dortmund star Daniel Svensson, who is also being targeted by Leeds United and Inter Milan.

Dortmund are set to demand €30m (£26m) for the left-back, and at this stage, there is only a 30% chance he will leave the German club during the next transfer window, having emerged as an important player.

Svensson is said to have 'significantly improved' since Niko Kovac took charge, and his current employers are in a strong negotiating position, given that he is under contract until 2029.

Svensson may not be necessary signing for Arsenal

Former teammate Jeppe Tverskov has previously been full of praise for the full-back, saying: "He is a machine. He has a strong body and can run a lot. During the time when we played almost every three days, there were many who played many minutes. The only difference was that, in every eternal fight, he had 13 kilometers in him. It is very impressive."

Since then, the nine-time Sweden international has become a key player for Dortmund, making 30 appearances in all competitions this season, and creating 17 big chances in the Bundesliga, the third-highest number in the squad.

The Gunners are eyeing a midfielder.

The former Nordsjaelland has also displayed his defensive qualities by averaging 0.4 blocks per 90, which ranks him in third place, so the Gunners may have been left impressed after conducting a scouting mission last month.

That said, Arsenal already have a number of options at left-back, with Lewis-Skelly's development arguably being hampered by a lack of game time this season, so bringing in Svensson this summer probably isn't necessary.
