Liverpool blamed for Nottingham Forest transfer breakdown

The January transfer window has slammed shut, but there are still plenty of business being done by clubs looking to make free agent signings.

Across Europe, teams are still allowed to sign free agents who are either out of contract or have been released by their previous club. This means managers can still reshape their squads by adding experienced stop‑gaps, medical‑cover replacements, or short‑term boosters without paying a transfer fee.

It also opens the door for players who were released earlier in the season to find new homes, often on short‑term deals until the end of the campaign.

But there are also still information coming out of proposed transfers, like Curtis Jones to Inter Milan. The Serie A club opened direct talks with Liverpool toward the end of the window. However, the Anfield club were unwilling to sanction an exit.

Now Fabrizio Romano has explained that a major reason for the club not wanting to let Jones go was his contract situation, with the Italian transfer guru also revealing that Davide Frattesi’s move to Nottingham Forest was invertedly scuppered by the Reds:

“Inter with Liverpool had the Jones speech,” Romano said on his Italian YouTube channel (via FCInter1908)

What was the problem? The player’s contract, there was an agreement on salary and project, Liverpool had been offered a loan with the right to buy at 40 million, the same figures as the Frattesi-Nottingham Forest operation, also the one already set. However, Liverpool chose not to give the green light because Jones did not have an agreement with Liverpool to renew his contract. Inter loses Jones and decides to keep Frattesi, blows up the operation with Nottingham on loan with the right to buy at 40 million.”

“Will Inter return to Jones in the summer? We’ll see, there will also be other English clubs interested,” Romano revealed.
