Liverpool have to wait until the summer now to bring in new faces, unless they delved into the free agent market
Liverpool are back in Premier League action this weekend with a home clash against Manchester City on Sunday. They head into their upcoming clash at Anfield off the back of their 4-1 win at home to Newcastle United last time out. Hugo Ekitike scored twice against the Toon Army, whilst Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konate also found the net.
The Reds are positioned in 6th place in the table after 24 fixtures. They are two points off the top four behind Manchester United. Arne Slot’s side won the title last season but haven’t been able to reach the same heights this time around.
Liverpool eye Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs
According to Football Insider, Liverpool hold an ‘interest’ in Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs along with Chelsea and Manchester City. The report adds that the Black Cats are ‘expecting’ bids of over £50million for his signature in the summer. He is under contract at the Stadium of Light until June 2030 meaning his current club are under no immediate pressure to sell him anytime soon and can afford to wait for big money.
Roefs, 23, joined Regis Le Bris’ men last August and penned a five-year deal in the North East following their promotion from the Championship. He has since adapted well to life in England and has become one of the most talented stoppers in the division. The ex-Holland youth international, who stands tall at 6ft 4inc, has made 25 appearances in all competitions, 24 of which have come in the league.
The ‘keeper rose up through the academy at NEC Nijmegen. He was a regular for them at various different youth levels before breaking into their first-team. Roefs went on to play 42 matches for the Eredivisie outfit altogether before heading out the exit door for a new challenge.
Would Sunderland stopper Robin Roefs suit Liverpool?
Liverpool could see Roefs as someone to bolster their options between the sticks. If he joined the Reds, he would give them more competition and depth in that department. He may have been identified by Slot as a long-term replacement for Alisson, who is now 33.
Roefs joined Sunderland last year as a bit of an unknown quantity. At the time, their sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “Robin is a talented young goalkeeper, who has been in high demand this summer after an impressive season in the Eredivisie. Right from our opening conversations, his desire to join Sunderland was clear and we are delighted that he’s now a member of our team.
“This was an area of our squad where we wanted increased competition and he has all the attributes to play at the highest level, so we’re looking forward to working with him to ensure he achieves that outcome at the Stadium of Light.”
Meanwhile, Roefs himself said: “It feels really good to have signed for Sunderland. Joining such a big Club with a rich history is a proud moment for me, and I’m excited for the challenge ahead in the Premier League.”
