The Memphis Grizzlies are believed to be entering full rebuild mode after trading two-time All-Star Jaren Jackson Jr. earlier this week.
Cutting ties with Ja Morant would be the next logical move if Memphis is indeed going in the right direction.
The Miami Heat has shown interest in the Murray State product lately. However, according to a recent report, less than three hours before the trade deadline, it’s highly unlikely Miami will get its ultimate wish this season.
“The Grizzlies are struggling to generate a real market for Morant, as those with interest have not been willing to offer up a first-round pick in discussions,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported. “General manager Zach Kleiman and the Grizzlies' brass are ready to move on from Morant before the trade deadline if they can salvage a first-round pick.”
“The Heat have long been linked to Morant, and they have been labeled by league sources as his preferred landing spot. With the Milwaukee (Bucks0 With all indications from the Bucks earlier in the week being that they would hold onto Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Heat began pivoting to other potential options before the trade deadline, including Morant.”
“Even though there is a level of interest in trading for Morant, the Heat do not want to give up anything more than expiring contracts and second-round assets. Miami will not be offering a first-round pick for Morant, sources said, especially now that they can attempt to renew Giannis trade talks in the summer.”
Many analysts have floated the idea of Miami trading Terry Rozier, Simone Fontecchio, and a 2029 first-round pick to the Grizzlies for Morant, as the hypothetical trade package would meet Memphis’ demands.
With the Heat being unwilling to trade away a future first-round pick, though, it would be virtually impossible for the three-time NBA champions to pull off a late trade for one of the most talented point guards in the league.
Unless something drastic happens between now and the 3 p.m. trade deadline, don’t expect Morant to land with the Heat.
