Suns trade for Cole Anthony, duck under luxury tax

The Phoenix Suns have traded Nick Richards and Nigel Hayes-Davis to the Milwaukee Bucks for Cole Anthony and Amir Coffey, per ESPN's Shams Charania.

The deal creates significant cap relief for the Suns. Phoenix, which has one of the NBA's most expensive rosters, is now $2.2 million below the luxury tax. Trading Richards creates a $5M trade exception.

Richards and Hayes-Davis were on the outskirts of head coach Jordan Ott's rotation this season. Both players played less than 10 minutes per game.

Anthony and Coffey are on expiring contracts, meaning the Suns could waive them without future cap penalties.

Anthony averaged 6.7 points and shot 42.4% from the field in Milwaukee this season. He spent the first five seasons of his career with the Orlando Magic, which drafted him No. 15 overall in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Anthony averaged 10+ points in his first four seasons. He could be an interesting role player for the Suns if they decide to keep him.

Coffey is a seven-year pro who began his career with the Los Angeles Clippers. He had a career year for the Clippers last season, averaging 9.7 points and shooting 40.9% from three in 72 games.

Phoenix has an open roster spot and could make another deal before Thursday afternoon's trade deadline. Teams have until 4 pm EST to submit trades to the league.

The Suns could use the roster spot to sign two-way player Jamaree Bouye to a standard contract. Bouye has played in 25 games this season, posting seven points and 1.6 assists per night.
