Rio Ngumoha, who is the youngest goalscorer in Liverpool history, joined the club’s academy in September 2024 after leaving Chelsea. He impressed across the U18s, U19s, and U21s during the 2024-25 season.
Ngumoha made his senior debut in January 2025, starting against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup. His first goal for the club came for the U18s in a 3-2 Premier League Cup win over Chelsea, followed by two goals for the U21s in a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa.
After a strong pre-season ahead of 2025-26, Ngumoha made his Premier League debut as a substitute at Newcastle United in August, scoring in the 100th minute to secure a 3-2 win, aged 16 years and 361 days.
He then became the youngest Liverpool player to feature in European competition at 17 years and 19 days, coming off the bench in a 3-2 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid. In September 2025, Ngumoha signed his first professional contract with Liverpool.
The England youth international has racked up 13 appearances across all competitions. The Premier League champions have carefully managed his playing time to support, rather than hinder, his development.
Liverpool’s disappointing season has limited Ngumoha’s minutes. He featured against Qarabag in the final Champions League group match, coming on in the 67th minute with the team 5-0 up.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool are set to pay an initial fee of £2.8million to Chelsea for the signing of Rio Ngumoha, with the amount potentially rising by a further £4million.
Under FIFA regulations, the Blues were entitled to compensation for the winger’s training and development. The final amount was determined by a Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC) tribunal.
The settlement is fixed, but bonuses apply if certain milestones are met. Liverpool could owe up to £6.8m, plus 20% of any future profit if he is sold. Add-ons depend on senior appearances, contracts, and Ngumoha, 17, earning international honours.
