Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will travel to Glasgow on Friday to complete his move to Celtic.
Despite the closure of the January transfer window, Martin O'Neill is still keen to add to his Hoops squad and is now honing in on England international Oxlade-Chamberlain. The former Arsenal and Liverpool star has been a free agent since leaving Turkish giants Besiktas last summer and has been keeping fit with Mikel Arteta's Premier League leaders at the Emirates.
And the 32-year-old is now on the verge of agreeing a deal to head north of the border. Chamberlain - capped 35 times by the Three Lions - will pen a short-term contract with Celtic to take him to the end of the season, with the option of an additional extension for a year beyond that.
Celts made five signings during the winter window, all of which were on loan deals. Boss O'Neill will have some tough decisions to make, with confirmation of Celtic's squad for their two-legged Europa League play-off round clash against Stuttgart.
UEFA regulations dictate that clubs can only made three changes to their squads, meaning that some of Hoops' new recruits will miss out on action in Europe.
Former Parkhead defender Charlie Mulgrew played against Chamberlain when he lined up for Scotland in a friendly clash back in 2014 as well as in a pre-season friendly while the midfielder was at Arsenal.
And he reckons the Premier League and Champions League winner would be an excellent signing as the champions try and claw back the six point gap between themselves and Premiership leaders Hearts.
He told the Go Radio Football Show: "(Getting him) would be amazing. When he was manager the first time, Martin always liked a signing like that on a free transfer.
"I remember Stan Varga coming in. There would always be someone who came in from left-field. He could be a good player for Celtic."
