Lakers predicted to acquire $10.8 million ex-76ers forward via buyout to assist Luka Doncic

The buyout market isn’t intended to help franchises land standout contributors, but rather to help them snag assets that can serve as serviceable role players.

While a stud like Cameron Thomas will be available every now and then, it’s far more likely for struggling assets like Chris Paul and Lonzo Ball to headline the list of buyout targets after a trade season ends.

There’s a good chance the Lakers will attempt to scour the market to see if a particular player catches their eye. Silver Screen and Roll’s Edwin Garcia has a hunch that a 6-foot-5 former Philadelphia 76ers guard could do just that.

“With (Gabe) Vincent gone, the Lakers are lacking a former Heat guard with a questionable injury history,” Garcia wrote Thursday. “Perhaps, they can sign (Haywood) Highsmith to fill that void.”

“After being traded to the Nets last offseason, Highsmith underwent surgery on his knee, suffered a setback, and has not played yet this season. Sound familiar?”

“The Nets eventually waived him on Thursday morning. He is reportedly playing 5-on-5 basketball again and is drawing interest from teams.”

“Last season as a member of the Heat, He averaged 6.5 points and shot 38% from three-point range. It’s rare to get shooting that good via the buyout market, making Highsmith a compelling option…if he’s healthy.”

It’s safe to assume the Lakers will take a cautious approach when exploring buyout moves for injury-prone assets. After all, part of the reason the franchise traded Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks last season for Luka Doncic was because of Davis’ extensive injury history.

That said, it could be worth at least looking into a deal for Highsmith, as the Wheeling product has transformed into a solid three-and-D wing since leaving the 76ers in 2019.
