Chelsea should activate midfielder’s buy-back clause now Enzo Maresca has gone - opinion

Chelsea have had their fair share of transfer mistakes in the past, and they may have another to add to the list.

The likes of Mohamed Salah and Kevin de Bruyne spring to mind when thinking of players that Chelsea let slip away in the past.

But nowadays, Chelsea are generally smarter with their BlueCo model, as pretty much every unwanted player makes their way to Strasbourg.

Admit it, Chelsea were wrong to sell Renato Veiga 🤔

Especially, with Chelsea trying to sign Jacquet!

Mike Penders is one of the latest success stories at Strasbourg, with plans for Chelsea to integrate him into the first-team squad next season.

However, there is a feeling at Strasbourg that they no longer have an identity.

Regardless, it’s the French club that has benefited from a Chelsea player sale.

Chelsea have a buy-back clause for Diego Moreira

Diego Moreira left Chelsea and joined Strasbourg back in the summer of 2024 for £1.7 million just two months after Enzo Maresca took charge.

Since leaving Chelsea, Moreira has been absolutely thriving in his new role at Strasbourg, becoming one of the most dangerous wingers in Ligue 1.

And with Liam Rosenior in charge, he’ll know exactly the kind of player he is from their time in France together.

Interestingly, at the time of the deal, Ben Jacobs reported that the deal had a buy-back clause in it.

Diego Moreira continues to thrive at Strasbourg

Diego Moreira has transformed into one of the most reliable and creative players in Ligue 1 this season.

The 21-year-old has found a home under Gary O’Neil, who has utilised Moreira’s explosive pace and directness to drive the attack. This season, Moreira has recorded three goals and six assists across all competitions, operating as a right midfielder and a left midfielder.

In last night’s 3-1 Coupe de France victory over Monaco, Moreira was instrumental in setting the tone. In the 7th minute, he delivered a pinpoint cross, which led to Martial Godo’s opening goal.

It’s his speed and skills that really set him apart. He has flair of a similar ilk to Estevao Willian, but also the quality to provide end product in the final third.
