Report: What figures inside Chelsea are now saying about Robert Sanchez's future after Mike Penders decision

Robert Sanchez is currently Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper, while Filip Jorgensen is his deputy.

Since arriving at the club, Liam Rosenior has been impressed with Jorgensen and has said as much.

Even so, it has been claimed that Jorgensen will leave Chelsea in the summer as the 23-year-old searches for more starting opportunities.

Does Jorgensen deserve to start over Sanchez?

That would likely leave Sanchez and Mike Penders as the two main shot-stoppers in Chelsea’s first-team squad.

Chelsea adamant Robert Sanchez has future at the club

According to TEAMtalk, the message from within Chelsea is that Sanchez remains in the club’s plans going forward.

Chelsea were keen on Mike Maignan, but the Frenchman recently signed a new contract at AC Milan, putting an end to the Blues’ interest.

With Jorgensen likely to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer, Sanchez will now be expected to compete with Penders for the No.1 spot.

Who is Chelsea’s best goalkeeper?

The same TEAMtalk report claims that Chelsea intend to integrate the 20-year-old into their senior squad once he returns from Strasbourg.

Penders joined Chelsea’s sister club on a season-long loan last summer and has impressed there. He will now be hoping to replace Sanchez as the Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Mike Penders should not be made first-choice goalkeeper straight away

For as good as Penders has been at Strasbourg this season, the Belgian should not just walk into Chelsea’s team when he returns to the club.

Sanchez has also done well in the current campaign and has not given Rosenior a reason to drop him.

In total, the Spain international has kept nine clean sheets in 23 Premier League appearances. As per FBref, he also has a save percentage of 70.8%, which is one of the highest in the English top flight.

Sanchez joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023. It has taken some time, but he has settled at Stamford Bridge and slowly become one of Chelsea’s top performers. It would be harsh if the 28-year-old was instantly replaced by Penders.
