Boston Celtics acquire John Tonje in Chris Boucher trade

The Celtics added a new face to the organization after completing four total trades this week ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. The Celtics acquired two-way guard John Tonje from the Jazz as part of the Chris Boucher trade. The C’s also sent cash considerations and a future second-round pick to Utah as part of the deal.

The Celtics already formally announced Tonje has joined Boston. He’s expected to be on a two-way contract. The C’s promoted big man Amari Williams to the active roster Thursday, which is why there’s room on their two-way roster. The other two-way players on the C’s are Ron Harper Jr. and Max Shulga.

Tonje, 24, was picked 53rd overall by the Jazz in the 2025 draft. He played in 32 games for the Salt Lake City Stars in the G League this season, averaging 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. He’ll be expected to join the Maine Celtics as a two-way player going forward.

Tonje spent six seasons in the collegiate ranks between Colorado State, Missouri and Wisconsin. He spent his final season with the Badgers, putting together a stellar All-American year. Tonje was one of the best scorers in the country at Wisconsin, putting up impressive numbers before turning pro.

The Celtics made four separate trades this week. They started with moving Anfernee Simons to Chicago in exchange for big man Nikola Vucevic. The C’s also dealt Josh Minott to the Nets and Xavier Tillman Sr. to the Hornets, along with the Boucher deal.

As a result of the trades, the Celtics dipped under the luxury tax. Boston currently has 12 rostered players, so it’ll need to add a couple players to get to the minimum needed of 14 players. It was a busy deadline in Boston that was mainly financially motivated in the name of future flexibility.
