Mark Robins was ready to swap the defensive potential of Jaden Dixon for the attacking potential of Ato Ampah in a surprise last flurry of winter window transfer business.

Centre-half Dixon, aged 18, has joined Arsenal after two-and-a-half years with Stoke City, where he has broken into the England under-19s set-up and made six first team appearances.

His chances this season have been limited by Stoke’s strong record at the back and, having been open to sending him out on loan to the lower leagues, a permanent exit was ultimately sanctioned. He is now training with Arsenal’s under-21s squad.

Winger Ampah, aged 19, has made the opposite journey from London. He had been on Chelsea’s books since the age of 10 and has been in the England under-20s squad this season.

He is currently recovering from a toe injury but is hoping to make an impact in the Championship this season.

Robins, when asked if the Dixon move had caught him by surprise, said: “Yeah, it did. He’s still 18 and Arsenal have come in and offered him a different pathway. Jaden wanted to take that.

“He’s from down there. He came to us after his release from Tottenham so it’s an interesting move for him.

“It’s not something we needed to do, not something we had to do but something we chose to do and with Ato coming the other way that made more sense. We need some players who are going to help us in that front end.

“Over time we’ve got someone else in the building who is a really exciting player, can hopefully develop to someone who is a really good player not only in the Championship but with the potential to go further. It remains to be seen.”
