“Maresca gave Chelsea identity” – Enzo Fernández on changes since manager exit

Enzo Fernández has explained that Chelsea built a clear footballing identity under Enzo Maresca, and that much of that work still shapes the team following the manager’s departure.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESPN, the Argentina international highlighted Maresca’s impact on the Chelsea squad as a whole.

“Enzo Maresca gave the club an identity, and that helped all of us,” Fernández said. “With the arrival of the new coach, there were some changes. He gave a lot of confidence to each player, and we are doing well.”

The midfielder stressed that the transition between coaches has been smoother than many might expect. According to Fernández, the overall idea has remained stable despite differences in day-to-day work.

“Things haven’t changed much compared to Maresca. He just works in a different way,” he explained. “We feel very good because we are getting results and improving our level of play.”

Fernández also pointed to continuity in Chelsea’s attacking principles, while noting a slight adjustment under Liam Rosenior.

“We had similar moments in matches, so the idea of play didn’t change too much,” he said. “Liam gives a bit more freedom in the final third, but we already had a base with Enzo Maresca.”

That freedom, he added, has been key to expressing himself on the pitch. “In the final metres of the pitch, he gives us freedom to express ourselves,” Fernández said.

Enzo not weighed down by Chelsea pressure

When asked about pressure during difficult periods, the Chelsea midfielder was measured. “On a personal level, I don’t really feel it,” he stated. “Unconsciously, when you don’t get results, things start to come up.”

His response, however, remains consistent. “I try to give my best in every training session and enjoy myself,” Fernández concluded. “When we get results, everything starts to improve for the team.”

The comments underline how Chelsea’s current progress is still closely tied to the identity established under Maresca, even as the club continues to evolve under new leadership.

Enzo Fernández has been linked with a Chelsea exit since Marseca’s departure, however, he doesn’t appear to be hinting towards that.
