Rob Edwards pre match press conference: Wolves v Chelsea
Everything you need to know from Rob Edwards press conference ahead of Wolves v Chelsea
Rob Edwards struck a calm, upbeat tone ahead of Wolves v Chelsea. He spoke about new signings, a few exits, the latest injury news, and what he expects from a Chelsea side packed with talent.
Here is what stood out from his press conference.
Two new signings, and both are ready
Edwards confirmed that Wolves’ two new additions will be available this weekend. He also hinted that supporters should expect to see both of them “at some stage” against Chelsea.
Angel: “Brilliant technical player” with real intelligence
Edwards sounded genuinely excited to be working with Angel again. He said they have kept in touch over the years, and he had even joked that he would “sign you one day”.
What he likes about Angel:
Top level technique, and a clean way of receiving and moving the ball.
Game intelligence, which Edwards mentioned more than once.
Versatility, with the ability to play in different roles.
Desire to be at the club, even with the team’s current league situation.
Interestingly, Edwards said there was not much persuading needed. He explained that Wolves were contacted after a televised game and a strong performance, and that helped kick the move into action. The deal took longer than he wanted, but he was clear that transfers rarely go smoothly.
Edwards also pointed out that Angel has already shown he is willing to step out of his comfort zone in his career, including moving abroad, learning languages, and adapting. He expects Angel’s intelligence to help him handle the demands of the Premier League.
Adam Armstrong: goals, work rate, and flexibility
Edwards was equally positive about Adam Armstrong. He described him as:
A proven finisher
A hard worker with a strong attitude
Experienced at this level
Able to play across the front line, not only as a central striker
Edwards stressed the “hunger” both new players are bringing, and said they have something to prove. He also mentioned that staff knowledge of Armstrong helped, including insight from within the coaching team.
One interesting tactical note: Edwards talked about needing to tweak plans week to week, depending on the opponent. That makes players like Armstrong, who can fill multiple roles, even more valuable.
Outgoings: respect, control, and a clear plan
Edwards confirmed a few departures and likely departures, while repeating a key message: the club is staying in control.
Crystal Palace move: “Nothing but positive things”
Edwards spoke warmly about Jorgen Strand Larsen who joined Crystal Palace late in the window. He called him the ultimate professional, said he always gave everything, and that it was the right move for both the club and the player at this stage.
More exits expected
Edwards also confirmed:
Emmanuel Agbadou is leaving (he indicated that deal is done).
Jhon Arias has a deal agreed and it should be completed in the coming days.
He addressed the worry fans often have when deals happen after the UK window closes, saying Wolves have been aware of the situation and no one will leave unless the club believes it is right for the future.
Injury update: one back, one still out
Edwards’ team news was mostly positive.
Krejci is back training after having flu and is available.
Bellegarde is another week further into training, so progressing.
Toti is still not training with the team and remains unavailable.
Reflecting on Bournemouth: “A lot of good things to take”
With two defeats in a row, Edwards was asked about the Bournemouth game. He did not sound alarmed.
He said Wolves played well and created big chances. He pointed to the goals conceded as the key issue, and noted the late goal came when Wolves were pushing at the end. Overall, he felt the performance was better than his initial reaction right after the match.
What Edwards expects from Chelsea
Edwards was clear about the size of the task.
He described Chelsea’s squad as “amazing” and said whatever team they pick will be fresh and full of talent. He also praised their recruitment and said they have a clear model.
Even so, he framed it as the kind of match Wolves want:
A big test
Against world class players
A chance to measure themselves against the best
The bigger picture: building toward next season, starting now
Edwards also spoke about the value of this window for the months ahead. He said he is pleased with the squad refresh and feels it should put Wolves in a better position to:
Act quickly in the summer
Start next season’s work earlier
Get more time with the group in pre season
That last point mattered to him. He sees early work with the squad as a key factor in building momentum.
