Martin O'Neill has confirmed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to undergo a Celtic medical on Saturday.

The former Arsenal, Liverpool and England star is a free agent after leaving Besiktas and is set to join the Premiership champions after successful transfer talks with Parkhead chiefs over the last few days. But he won’t join in time to make the player registration deadline for the Europa League clash with Stuttgart.

He'll join Deadline Day additions Junior Adamu, Joel Mvuka and Benjamin Arthur as the latest new recruit.

The 32-year-old brings a wealth of experience, but may need some time to get up to speed. Injuries have severely limited Oxlade-Chamberlain's playing time, having last turned out for Besiktas nearly 10 months ago.

That was an 11 minute cameo off the bench against Adana Demirspor back in May, so it's unlikely he'll pitched in from the start with the Hoops in the midst of a three-way title battle with Rangers and Hearts.

But Martin O'Neill is delighted he's managed to land the Southampton academy product given the other options that were on the table.

"I spoke to him this morning, said O'Neill. "I think he wants to come. I think he's coming.

"I would have assumed he's got a lot of options. There was talk at Arsenal because they might pick up injuries. I'm delighted he's going to come. I think he's doing a medical tomorrow and all being well, I hope he signs up."

"I think the football club itself has convinced him more than anything else. We might be having this conversation in the next 48 hours and he might come up and see what the weather's like and head back down."
