Liverpool are required to pay Chelsea a sum of money following the ruling of a PFCC tribunal

The 17-year-old arrived at Anfield in September 2024 and signed his first professional contract a year later. His departure from Chelsea sparked ‘great anger’ within the west London club, as they had reportedly put ‘multiple contract offers’ on the table for Ngumoha before his move.

BBC Sport reported Chelsea felt so strongly about the situation that they ‘banned Liverpool youth scouts from attending academy matches’.

Now, it has been determined how much the Reds owe their Premier League opponents for the signing of Ngumoha.

Liverpool could pay Chelsea as much as £6.8 million for Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool are required to pay an initial fee of £2.8 million to Chelsea for the signing of Ngumoha. As initially reported by The Athletic, this figure could rise by a further £4 million.

The winger left Chelsea’s academy to facilitate his Anfield move, meaning the Blues are entitled to costs for the player’s training and development. A Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC) tribunal has decided Liverpool will owe their rivals as much as £6.8 million, once performance related add-ons are considered.

The add-ons relate to senior appearances, contracts and potential honours representing his country. Chelsea will also be entitled to 20 percent of the profit made from a future Ngumoha sale.

Rio Ngumoha impact at Liverpool so far

Ngumoha was named in Liverpool’s squad for their 2025 pre-season tour and immediately impressed with two goals and two assists across his four games. His efforts earned him a place in Arne Slot’s senior squad this season and he marked his Premier League debut in sensational fashion.

Ngumoha came off the bench in stoppage time against Newcastle United with the scoreline at 2-2. The 17-year-old scored in the tenth minute of injury time to snatch the win and the attention of fans and the media alike.

Ngumoha has made mostly cameo appearances for Liverpool this season as they navigate their way through a tricky campaign. The Reds have endured disappointing runs of results, which has put pressure on Slot and the senior players to perform.

Had Liverpool’s season been less chaotic, Ngumoha may have had significantly more minutes in the tank already. That much was proven when the Reds enjoyed a dominant result over Qarabag in the Champions League. Ngumoha was brought on after 67 minutes alongside Trey Nyoni, allowing the duo a decent run-out with no risk to the result.
