Liverpool have endured a difficult season and are preparing for significant changes in the summer transfer window. The reigning champions fell out of the title race early as a major squad overhaul led to an inevitable period of transition.
While a run of six defeats in seven league games between September and November marked a low point, the Reds have since stabilised. Just one loss in their last 12 league matches reflects Arne Slot’s more pragmatic, defensively solid approach, with the recent 4-1 win over Newcastle United suggesting signs of a return to form.
That victory also highlighted the potential of new signings Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, whose combination play offered encouragement for the future.
However, key decisions remain as Liverpool continue to reshape their squad. The club ended a quiet January window by agreeing a deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, who will officially join in the summer, though further defensive reinforcements are still expected.
Away from the pitch, Liverpool have also strengthened their recruitment structure by appointing Laurens Paulussen as a scout, covering the Belgium and Netherlands region. Paulussen joins from KV Mechelen, where he had worked as a first-team scout since 2022.
A former right-back, Paulussen enjoyed a 12-year playing career across Belgian football, making 260 appearances and representing clubs including Beveren, Westerlo, KV Mechelen and Lommel.
He also earned Belgium U20 call-ups before retiring in 2022. Paulussen represented Belgium at the youth level with the U20s but did not earn any official caps.
His limited international involvement included two brief appearances at the 2007 Viareggio Cup, totalling just six minutes. He never featured at senior level and shifted his focus fully to his club career in the early 2010s.
His addition underlines Liverpool’s continued focus on identifying talent across key European markets ahead of the summer transfer window.
