Liverpool underwent a major first-team overhaul in the summer of 2025 after winning a record-equalling 20th league title the previous season. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Díaz and Darwin Nunez all departed, with the club reinvesting heavily to refresh the starting XI.
Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez were brought in, while Giovanni Leoni arrived as one for the future. Liverpool also reshaped their goalkeeping department, adding Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman as cover for Alisson Becker.
Meanwhile, Jarell Quansah, Ben Doak, Caoimhin Kelleher and Tyler Morton all left on permanent deals. The Reds were also rocked by the tragic death of Diogo Jota in July, a key figure in the title-winning squad.
That level of upheaval contributed to a sharp drop-off in performances during the 2025-26 campaign, with the causes and consequences likely to be analysed well beyond the end of the season.
With several contract situations unresolved, senior players nearing the latter stages of their careers and more changes expected this summer, Liverpool’s recruitment team are already planning ahead. After securing Jeremy Jacquet, attention is set to turn to other potential reinforcements.
One name to generate significant interest is Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international has impressed in the Bundesliga since joining RB Leipzig from Leganes last summer. Bayern Munich have also been linked but were reportedly deterred by Leipzig’s valuation and reluctance to sell.
While Leipzig’s model is built on developing and selling talent, reports suggest an offer of around €100m (£87m) could test their resolve. Diomande previously admitted his “dream” is to play for Liverpool – the club his father supports.
“I want to represent Liverpool. I’m a huge fan of Liverpool,” the teenager revealed during a TikTok stream. “My father’s dream is to watch me play at Anfield. So fulfilling that dream is also my aspiration”. Diomande has switched agents ahead of the summer transfer window.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomandé has signed today with Roc Nation Sports International as new agency. Important decision ahead of summer transfer window with several top clubs keen.”
