Liverpool have sensational starter on an personalised training program and its working wonders

Liverpool have been working closely with Florian Wirtz to add more muscle mass to the German’s frame to contend with the physical challenge the Premier League presents.

Gary Neville said that Wirtz looked like a boy on the pitch for Liverpool, and was scathing in his review of other facets of the playmaker’s game.

Now, however, there is a rather welcome silence from pundits regarding the no.7.

Wirtz is now showing exactly why Liverpool smashed their club record transfer fee to sign him. Of course they broke it again to sign Alexander Isak but for a matter of weeks, he was the most expensive player in Reds’ history.

Liverpool’s nutritionists ‘love’ Florian Wirtz after helping him add 3-4kg of muscle

According to a report from reporter Lewis Steele, Liverpool have been working with Wirtz to add more bulk to his frame in a bid to contend with the rigours of the Premier League.

Steele reports: “Wirtz needed to bulk up. He has added several kilograms of muscle mass (between 3 to 4kg) and spent hour upon hour in the gym.

“The nutritionists love him as he is a big-eater whose favourite, protein-heavy meal of the day is eggs or pancakes for breakfast.”

It has been obvious in recent weeks that Wirtz’s ability to ride incoming challenges from defenders has improved.

Not only has he found his rhythm, which is allowing him to evade these challenges before they arrive, but he is also visibly stronger.

Strength isn’t the only trait to cope with England’s physically demanding game. As Mohamed Salah has proved for years, the way you set yourself up before a challenge arrives is vital.

Liverpool’s efforts are paying off with Wirtz now shining in the Premier League as they expected when they agreed a £115m fee with Bayer Leverkusen for his transfer.

Wirtz will become another testament to the Liverpool recruitment strategy

When Liverpool suddenly spent £460million on transfers in the summer window, it was labelled as a scatterbrain approach and in violation with their vaunted transfer strategy.

For years and years, Liverpool have bided their time and only pulled the trigger on big transfers when they felt they had identified a true ‘difference-maker’.

Virgil van Dijk has the first major example of this. It failed when they tried it with Darwin Nunez, but that was anomalous.

Wirtz is a truly sensational talent. Still only 22, there is a frighteningly exciting future ahead of the young German.

He has two goals and an assist in his last two games and is now at six goals and eight assists for the campaign. A strong finish to the season could see a major surprise for those who predicted he would flop.
