Liverpool are up against Arsenal in a transfer battle for this exciting summer transfer target

Liverpool are said to be ‘accelerating negotiations’ for a midfield transfer target ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Reds have a number of positions within their squad they are looking to bolster at the end of the season. While defence is a high priority, Arne Slot’s midfield is also an area of focus ahead of the new season.

Names including Aurelien Tchouameni and Adam Wharton have been heavily linked with a potential Anfield move this year. The duo would likely arrive and challenge as regular starters for Liverpool, while another target in Kees Smit is likely more one for the future.

Liverpool ‘take the lead’ in race for Kees Smit

Liverpool have been linked with AZ Alkmaar midfielder Smit this week but they aren’t alone in their interest. Real Madrid and Arsenal are also in the picture for the 20-year-old, in what has been described as a ‘frantic race’ for his signature.

According to Fichajes, Madrid are said to be more on the side-lines while Liverpool and Arsenal have ‘taken the lead’ in the pursuit of Smit.

AZ Alkmaar are ‘preparing for an historic bidding war’ when it comes to the transfer situation with Smit. He is described as combining ‘exceptional game reading with ball control beyond his years’.

The midfielder is under contract in the Netherlands until 2028 but with reports ramping up around him, it’s likely Smit could be on the move in the summer.

Kees Smith transfer a ‘story for the summer’, says Fabrizio Romano

Fabrizio Romano recently addressed rumours surrounding Smit and Liverpool’s link with him. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer expert described this is as a ‘story for the summer’, suggesting bids for Smit can be expected.

“Then many questions, Kees Smit and Liverpool. Guys, there are all the big clubs in England on Kees Smit and also Spain, including Real Madrid and not only them. So it’s going to be a big battle for Kees Smit, but not for this window. The deal is expected to happen in the summer,” Romano said prior to the winter deadline.

Smit contributed ten goals and five assists in all competitions last season while playing in a number of positions. The 20-year-old is up eight goal-scoring contributions so far this season, while also playing in multiple roles in the midfield.
