Anthony Davis is unlikely to be dealt before the trade deadline

The Washington Wizards made shocking news by trading for Anthony Davis at the trade deadline. Washington’s rebuilding efforts saw them going “all in” for Davis and Trae Young this year to improve the team dramatically. The hope is to have a strong season next year to compete for the playoffs and bring the franchise back to greater relevance.

However, Davis is already unsure about his future with the Wizards. The Athletic reported that Davis talked about the team needing to improve for him to consider staying long-term:

“It’s hard to say (I would definitely stay) without the proper plan. Obviously, it’s tough right now with the team. It shows with their record, but adding certain pieces, that can change. It’s year by year. They could be the No. 1 team in the East next year.”

The question was asked whether Davis is confirmed to stay with the team since a contract extension will be needed soon. Only one more season is guaranteed after this one as Davis is expected to use his player clause to opt out. Washington took a risk by trading for Davis before knowing if he plans to stick around long-term.

What Anthony Davis’ Comment Really Means

The comment from Davis was surprising since most legendary players joining a new franchise are usually excited about that being their new home. Teams in the Washington’s scenario typically gain a new franchise player intended to stick around for the long run.

Davis’ statement is important since it confirms that he is not afraid of leaving after next season if the Wizards fail to turn things around. The desire for a new max contract extension could limit his options since it’s hard to envision a deep market for Davis. Injuries and the aging process make Davis a risky player to invest in.

Washington will have to compete for the playoffs next season and show potential for a brighter future. The plan of Davis and Young leading the team also sees belief in their young players progressing enough to impress the new stars. Davis needs to see this play out before he commits to sticking around beyond his contract.

Wizards Believe Anthony Davis Will Stay

Washington has a full season next year to see if Davis and Young can quickly form chemistry as an All-Star duo. Prospects like Alex Sarr and Tre Johnson must fit into the new offense and continue improving with the top talents taking away looks.

Davis is not shy here about potentially leaving in free agency for a chance to contend if the Wizards fail to improve. Most other teams will offer less money than Washington will, but Davis could opt to give up that extra money for a better situation.

The Wizards clearly knew they were gambling on Davis and have hope their vision will be accurate. Young and Davis both have a lot to prove after they were traded for relatively weak trade packages from teams giving up on them. Washington decided to reboot their roster by buying low on risky All-Star names in a plan that won’t succeed or fail until next season.
