Dominik Szoboszlai will not sign a new contract at Liverpool if latest claims in Hungary are true - opinion

Liverpool have had a mixed season so far, but Dominik Szoboszlai has been one of the rare bright sparks along with Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.

The Hungarian has often been used out of position due to Mohamed Salah’s absence and constant problems at right-back.

But even so, Steven Gerrard still thinks Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s best player in 2025/26.

However, the versatile midfielder’s long-term future at Anfield is not certain right now amid interest from Real Madrid.

It was reported last month that Liverpool want Szoboszlai to sign a new deal, while a new update on a potential fresh contract has now emerged in Hungary.

Dominik Szoboszlai will not sign a new contract at Liverpool for £300,000-a-week

The 25-year-old is out of contract in 2028, so there is still plenty of time to agree terms.

Meanwhile, Hungarian outlet Blikk have now suggested this week that the player could demand £300,000-a-week to sign an extension.

For context, such a sum, as per Capology, would make Szoboszlai Liverpool’s third-highest-paid player behind Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

An argument could be made that he deserves such an honour, but FSG have already set a precedent when it comes to wages.

As everyone knows, Manchester City signed Liverpool target Marc Guehi during the winter transfer window.

After the deal was confirmed, an insight into why the Reds didn’t pursue a deal for Guehi in January was shared in The Athletic.

The main sticking point, as shown, seemed to be his £300,000-a-week wage demands, which Liverpool were reluctant to pay at a time when the club were negotiating contracts for players.

The report said: “City paid Guehi’s agents a significant commission and that the player’s wage demands were understood to be around £300,000 per week. Over the course of a five-and-a-half year contract that represents an outlay on salary alone of £85.8m. (City say Guehi’s wages are significantly lower than that).

“Liverpool didn’t view that overall package as a smart market opportunity, given the club’s self-sustaining business model. It would have proved problematic in terms of their wage structure at a time when sporting director Richard Hughes is trying to negotiate a number of contract renewals.”

So, if Liverpool didn’t want to give in to Guehi’s wage demands as they would set an unwanted precedent for players in talks over new deals (Szoboszlai being one), why would they then go out and give a player the exact fee the centre-back was reportedly after?

Where will Dominik Szoboszlai rank among PL midfielders when all is said and done?

The Steven Gerrard comparisons are obvious, but what’s a realistic ceiling for the Hungarian? 👀

Liverpool’s highest-paid players

At present, Salah is the top earner on £400,000-a-week, followed by Van Dijk (£350,000-a-week).

British record signing Alexander Isak takes third place with £280,000-a-week and Cody Gakpo is earning £250,000-a-week.

Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike are then both said to be earning £200,000-a-week at Anfield.

Given how crucial that duo have been for Liverpool in the last couple of months, handing Szoboszlai an extra £100,000-a-week ahead of them could indeed create a situation where Richard Hughes and co. have players and agents knocking down his door to demand more money.

The Reds already have the highest wage bill in the Premier League and must be wary of potential PSR and SCR rules.
