Ajax star Mika Godts’s agent Niels De Jonck says claims of interest from Arsenal and other clubs doesn’t surprise him.
Sporza have a detailed piece on the Belgian’s rise and why he hasn’t made his debut for the national team.
As part of it, the outlet interviewed the 20-year-old’s agent and asked about Arsenal, Barcelona and AS Roma interest.
Earlier this week, Voetbal International stated Mikel Arteta’s side and the La Liga club were among the clubs to have asked about Godts. The same source explained Ajax had turned down their approaches in the winter market.
The Eredivisie side informed the Gunners, Barcelona, Roma, Napoli and VfB Stuttgart that he could only leave in the summer.
Sporza relayed VI’s report to De Jonck and mentioned Arsenal, Barcelona, Roma and the German club making approaches to sign Godts. The representative explained why his client didn’t consider moving to Emirates or elsewhere in the recently concluded window.
“Logical, given his figures,” he said.
“But leaving Ajax was absolutely out of the question. He has a major goal: to play at least 100 matches [currently has 96]. He wants to be part of that club, so a transfer was out of the question anyway.”
The left winger has starred for Ajax this season, scoring 10 goals and contributing nine assists from 29 matches. He has over three years left on his contract. Despite this, his agent says Godts should be one of the Dutch club’s big sales in the summer.
“Together with Youri Baas, Godts should be Ajax’s next mega-transfer. The financial need to sell has disappeared in Amsterdam, but they won’t refuse a significant amount,” De Jonck explained.
It’s unclear whether Arsenal will return for the Belgian after this season.
Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are two left wingers at the Emirates. Arteta’s side could consider a move for Godts if one of Martinelli or Trossard were to leave.
