Liverpool staff are privately saying something concerning about Tyler Morton's exit - journalist

Elsewhere, Tyler Morton signed for Ligue 1 outfit Lyon, where he has now become a key figure.

Back in September 2025, the now ex-Liverpool man was praised for being ‘exceptional in the Casemiro role‘.

His upturn in form since leaving Anfield has even seen Morton receiving transfer interest over the winter, with some English clubs thought to have looked at the player.

While Morton was not a regular starter under Arne Slot, his exit, along with others like Harvey Elliott, appears to have had a negative impact on the club.

Speaking on the Walk On podcast this week, Simon Hughes suggested people at Liverpool think losing the likes of Elliott and Morton has made standards drop a bit in training and has seen the mood around the club lowered.

He said: “I mean, I think the difference between this season and last season, and James might develop on this, is, you know, last season, there were other players in the squad who weren’t available to Slot, who didn’t really get much of a run and have since been sold or moved on.

“And I actually think, you know, I was speaking to somebody at the club recently about this and the impact of losing players like Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton, one or two other younger players who were very used to the training standards at Liverpool and still had a belief that they could get into the team at some point. And they helped raise the standards of training, you know, the mood around the club.”

Tyler Morton explains lack of minutes under Arne Slot

Liverpool’s midfield has been called a ‘big problem’ by Wayne Rooney this season.

Having someone like Morton at the club may have helped with that, especially given the lack of defensive-minded options right now, barring Wataru Endo.

Yet, Slot didn’t start the former Liverpool man very often, and the player has a theory on why that was the case.

He said: “I think he thought I was a good player, but I don’t feel the trust was there as much.

“In my opinion, the limited opportunities were down to trust and not ability.

“When I got my opportunity in the cup, I felt like I played well. That’s all I could say. I stuck at it, stayed focused, got through to the end of the season and played in the under-21 Euros, which was amazing.

“I had a few conversations with him [Slot] during the season. A lot of footballers can be bitter about not playing and let their egos get in the way, but I’m not that type of lad.

“I personally disagreed with the limited amount of game time I got last season, but that was out of my control. I did everything I could.”
