Newcastle United have just lost to Liverpool and Manchester City.
I now have a question for you.
Think carefully.
When was the last time before that, when Newcastle United lost consecutive matches?
Have a good think.
Can you work it out yet? OK, if you can’t identify from memory when this last happened, have a guess at how long ago it was.
Weeks? A month ago? Two or three months ago? Four or five months ago?
Considering the way that certain journalists and Newcastle United fans are going on, with the negativity and indeed in some cases, abuse aimed at Eddie Howe and his players, surely it couldn’t be any longer ago than that, could it…?
Well, how about nine months?
These are the most recent instances of Eddie Howe and Newcastle United losing consecutive matches.
February 2026 – Liverpool (Away) and Manchester City (Away)
36 games going by in between before you get to…
May 2025 – Arsenal (Away) and Everton (Home)
10 games going by in between before you get to…
March 2025 – Liverpool (Away) and Brighton (Home)
23 games going by in between before you get to…
October 2024 – Brighton (Home) and Chelsea (Away)
19 games going by before you get to….
March 2024 – Chelsea (Away) and Manchester City (Away)
So before this past week and the defeats away to Liverpool and Man City, the previous 84 Newcastle United matches under Eddie Howe, a period of over 22 months, only three times have NUFC lost consecutive matches.
Maybe that is what some Newcastle United fans can’t handle it these days, they have lost all perspective.
Losing football matches on a regular basis used to be simply how it was, then Eddie Howe came along and changed all that.
Long losing runs no longer a regular reality, to lose two matches in a row, becoming pretty much a once a season thing recently.
Losing consecutive away games at Liverpool and Manchester City, with all the odds stacked against us, all the advantages those two clubs have over Newcastle United, for then some Newcastle United fans to behave the way they have.
Get a bit of perspective.
