Curtis Jones will be looking to work his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the World Cup this summer.
It is a dream for all footballers to represent their country on the international stage of a World Cup.
Curtis Jones will have his work cut out for him though.
The Liverpool player has featured in 21 of the 22 Premier League games he has been available for, but only 10 have been starts.
Being an unused substitute in Liverpool’s 0-0 draw at the Emirates was damaging to Jones who had started the previous six Premier League games.
Arne Slot demonstrates a consistent unwillingness to play Curtis Jones in the big games and that will continue to play on his mind as a big summer approaches.
Jones is a man full of self-belief, and there will come a time where he will no longer be happy coming in and out of the team.
Inter Milan did approach Liverpool in the final stages of the transfer window but the Reds swiftly shut that down, emphasising the fact that Curtis Jones was a key part of the squad.
In his pre-Manchester City press conference, Arne Slot admitted that there are discussion about extending Curtis Jones contract, that currently has 18 months left on it.
He said: “I think what you’ve seen… he has played a lot of minutes and unlucky in the sense that midfield is the only line we haven’t had injuries, but we kept because we have players but we need players in these positions. And the moment you start to need midfielders in different positions, the line gets smaller and smaller. We kept him, his situation hasn’t changed to us, he is one of 16 outfield players available we have with two young players in Nyoni and Ngumoha, so it would be strange if we let anyone go.”
“Interesting, someone else asks contracts questions, talks are taking place in other places. The moment we have news, we share it here. We are all aware he has 18 months left, so that is all I can say.”
With the World Cup looming, Curtis Jones will be pushing to pick up as many minutes as possible in an attempt to get into that squad this summer.
The Englishman has missed out on selection for the past three international camps but The Athletic has revealed why this has been wholly unfair on the player.
When Curtis Jones does play for Liverpool, he contributes to their attacking moves more frequently that many other England midfielders that are being picked by Thomas Tuchel.
According to the graph presented by The Athletic – Morgan Gibbs-White, Elliott Anderson, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott and Jordan Henderson have all been involved less in attacking sequences so far this season in terms of shots, chances created and build-up play compared to Curtis Jones in 2025/26.
He appears to have his work cut out for him under Thomas Tuchel, but if he continues to impress whenever called upon, he may just get himself on that plane this summer.
