'He's that good': Michael Owen delivers exciting verdict on how good Hugo Ekitike can become at Liverpool

Hugo Ekitike has scored 15 goals in all competitions since signing for Liverpool, already becoming one of their best players.

When the 2025 summer transfer window came to a close, it seemed clear that the Frenchman would be playing second fiddle to Alexander Isak.

There were even concerns about how Arne Slot could play Ekitike and Isak together.

For the most part, however, the Dutchman has not had to worry about that, as the Swede has spent much of 2025/26 injured or lacking match sharpness.

In Isak’s absence, Ekitike has cemented himself as Liverpool’s main man.

Michael Owen predicts Hugo Ekitike to become elite striker

The 23-year-old has already matched a Kenny Dalglish record, and has been compared to Fernando Torres by Peter Crouch.

Now, when speaking to Discovery Plus, Michael Owen was asked: “We’ve seen recently Ekitike compared to Fernando Torres. Do you agree with that comparison?”

Owen responded by saying Ekitike could become one of the best strikers in the world.

He said: “He’s got elements. I mean, Torres was so direct every time – straight line for the goal. I love this guy (Ekitike).

“I think this guy is going to be, you know, right up there when people talk about the best centre-forwards in the world. I think he’s that good. I can’t see a weakness.”

How Hugo Ekitike compares to Erling Haaland

The 23-year-old will need to continue his fine form this weekend when Liverpool host Manchester City.

The Sky Blues obviously have one of the most prolific number nines in world football on their books in Erling Haaland.

However, Haaland has never scored at Anfield, and his form in the Premier League has dipped recently, netting just once in his last seven matches.

Ekitike, meanwhile, has seven goals in his last eight league ties for the Reds.
