Wizards make final Anthony Davis injury decision for season after Mavericks trade

Anthony Davis was traded twice nearly a year apart.

A season ago, it was part of the shocking Luka Doncic trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. And this time around, AD went from the Dallas Mavericks to the Washington Wizards.

It was a bit of a surprise, to be sure. The Wizards have to finish with a top-eight pick to keep it this season, or otherwise it goes to the New York Knicks. They have no incentive to try and win for the rest of the season.

With that in mind, the news that came out about Davis on Friday night was no shock.

NBA insider Chris Haynes reports Davis won't play the rest of the season. It's due to a combination of a hand and a groin injury, writes Haynes.

The plan for Davis is "to get fully healthy for the 2026-27 season."

The Wizards had previously traded for Trae Young, and he may not play the rest of the way, either. Young will need a contract extension to stay with the Wizards, but getting Davis probably helps the likelihood of Young wanting to stick around. Washington probably wouldn't have traded for Trae in the first place without at least some certainty of his future plans.

The NBA probably won't love the Davis injury news as a concept, but the reality is that he was already hurt when the Mavs dealt him, and given his injury history, this one doesn't look quite as suspicious as some absences down the stretch might.

But clearly, given their position, the Wizards aren't surprising anyone with this news. AD will have to wait to make his debut with his new team.
