Former Liverpool recruitment analyst highlights one problem Arne Slot may have with Jeremy Jacquet

Liverpool have agreed to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. The player will join after the 2025/26 season comes to a close.

For the time being, Jacquet is still competing in France, most recently featuring in a 3-0 French Cup defeat against Marseille.

Questions have been raised about the £60m transfer fee, with some of the opinion that Liverpool are ‘suckers’.

However, the general view of the 20-year-old’s arrival has been positive, with Jamie Redknapp loving the Jacquet deal.

Now, a former member of Liverpool’s recruitment team has shared his verdict on the young centre-back.

The problem Liverpool could have with Jeremy Jacquet

Patrick Montgomery spent around a decade at Anfield, first joining as an Opponent Analyst for the U18 side in 2014.

He was promoted to Head of Scouting in 2020, a role he held until December 2024.

Now, Montgomery has been discussing the signing of Jacquet on The Breakdown podcast.

When doing so, he warned the defender may ‘make a few more errors’ when he first arrives at Liverpool.

He said: “He [Jacquet] recovers over a huge distance or he might step in and hit a driven diagonal or things that just catch the eye immediately and people might go, ‘Okay, that’s different.’

“He may make more mistakes because he’s younger. He may make a few more errors because he’s trying to learn the game a little bit more. But I think if he can have that consistency and reliability with his fitness and everything else, I do think he’s somebody that has that potential to be one of the better if not the best centre-back of his generation in the coming years for sure.”

Will Liverpool sign another centre-back after Jeremy Jacquet?

The view that Jacquet will need some time to adapt makes a lot of sense, given his age and lack of senior experience.

Elsewhere, Ibrahima Konate is due to become a free agent, while there has been a suggestion that Joe Gomez could leave in 2026, which would deplete the Reds’ centre-back ranks.

As a result, it wasn’t surprising to see Jamie Carragher and Danny Murphy calling for Liverpool to sign another defender at the end of the winter transfer window.

A move did not come to pass, though, and there have since been calls for a new centre-back to be signed in the summer.

On that front, Nico Schlotterbeck has been linked for a while and now has less than 18 months left on his Borussia Dortmund deal.
