The Golden State Warriors may be about to sign a former No. 2 overall draft pick to a free agent contract.
It's not a move that anyone necessarily saw coming, but it's what NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on Saturday: The Warriors are considering Lonzo Ball.
Ball was traded from the Chicago Bulls to the Cleveland Cavaliers ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season to add point guard depth for the Cavs.
That move didn't work out for Cleveland, and so they salary-dumped Ball in a trade to the Utah Jazz before the deadline.

The Jazz didn't actually want Ball, so they bought him out, and he is now going to be eligible to be signed as a free agent after not being claimed on waivers.
The problem is that Ball has had a nightmare season.
He's shooting 30.1% from the floor, and an even worse 27.2% from 3-point range.
Ball was never a great shooter, but this is the worst he's ever been at putting the ball in the basket.

Even in limited action, Ball has averaged 3.9 assists per game. He's known as a great leader of ball movement, which could fit nicely in Golden State. Ball also has strong defensive length that can make him useful on that end of the floor, too.
But if the Warriors take a chance on Lonzo, they'll be hoping his shot improves at least a little bit. Because if it doesn't, he's almost unplayable.
Cleveland moved on, and Utah didn't want him, but Lonzo may land in the Bay Area to try and keep the Warriors' pursuit of a late-season run alive.
