With Manchester City on in action until Sunday - away at Liverpool - Arsenal have moved nine points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side thanks to a largely routine win over the Black Cats at the Emirates Stadium.

Furthermore, the Gunners are nine clear of third-placed Aston Villa after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Martin Zubimendi followed up his goal against Leeds last week by breaking the deadlock just before the break with a fine strike from just outside the area.

The Spaniard, not too long after Declan Rice went close from similar range, was afforded far too much space and his effort beat Robin Roefs before going in off both posts.

Arsenal did begin the second half in nervous fashion but Viktor Gyokeres climbed off the bench to settle things, scoring with one of his first touches to continue his recent improvement in front of goal.

More to follow.
