Thunder vs. Rockets: The matchup

The Thunder look to stay afloat in the absence of injured superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is expected to be out through the NBA All-Star Break with an abdominal strain. Oklahoma City goes into Saturday’s matchup atop the Western Conference and holding a 4.5-game lead over the San Antonio Spurs with a 40-12 record and a plus-12.3 scoring differential, both of which are the best marks in the NBA. However, the Thunder also fell to 1-4 against the Spurs this season with a 116-106 loss Thursday in San Antonio. OKC was thumped in the rebounding department (63-46) and shot just 40% from the floor in the losing effort.

The Rockets hit the road for the first of three final games before the All-Star Break after dropping back-to-back home contests to Eastern Conference foes in the Boston Celtics (114-93) and Charlotte Hornets (109-99) on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Houston regroups had an off day to regroup after falling to a red-hot Charlotte team that extended its winning streak to eight games. Kevin Durant (31 points) and Jabari Smith Jr. (17) carried the Rockets’ scoring effort as the team’s only players to score double-digit points.
