Liverpool are reportedly accelerating contract talks with Dominik Szoboszlai after news of an impending contract extension first came from Hungary.
While Arne Slot and his players have struggled to perform collectively, there can be little criticism made of the individual season Szoboszlai is enjoying in the engine room.
Without him, Liverpool would be even worse off than they are. Not only has he proven himself to be one of the best midfielders in the world, but the 25-year-old has deputised at right back six times this season due to the injury crisis there.
Szoboszlai has eight goals and seven assists – more than Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo – and is on track to beat his best season in Red (8 goals and 9 assists in 2024-25).
Liverpool working hard to complete huge Dominik Szoboszlai contract renewal
This week, Hungarian outlet Blikk, reported that not only are “negotiations are underway” between Liverpool and Szoboszlai, but that contract renewal talks are now at “an important point.”
The report claimed that Liverpool would have to pay the 25-year-old £300,000 per week to get this contract deal done.
The player reportedly feels deserving of this pay having performed better than Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz this season after they were awarded massive salaries upon their record transfers to Anfield.
I’m convinced there’s no midfielder with a better goal catalogue than Dominik Szoboszlai. ?

Now, TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool are “ready to meet the salary demands of one of their most important players, with work now underway to finalise a crucial contract extension.”
This report, however, states that “Szoboszlai’s camp are seeking a package worth close to £250,000 per week.” This conflicts with Blikk’s report but it is encouraging to hear news that Liverpool are working hard to keep such an important player.
Liverpool now dealing with the consequences of their record summer transfer spend
When Liverpool spent £460m on transfers in the summer, it did not come without its own problems. The main issue has been Arne Slot’s handling of such a massive transition after the summer sales that were necessary to facilitate such a massive financial operation.
Another huge problem that is now starting to present itself is that the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Szoboszlai feel emboldened and even deserving of demanding huge salaries in line with what their new colleagues are being paid.
This is not a critique of either Konate or Szoboszlai, nor is it important if they are worth that money right now. The problem is that Liverpool now have an even bigger wage bill than in the past, and all future contract negotiations will be more difficult.
This is the price big clubs must pay to remain competitive at the very highest level in the modern game.
