Pat Spencer, Golden State Warriors
It was unclear what the Golden State Warriors were going to do with Pat Spencer. But today, they have finally answered the question that they will be keeping him around for the long-term, per Shams Charania.
Once the #1 lacrosse player in the country, the impressive two-sport athlete is now sporting a standard contract in Golden State. Spencer has been on a two-way deal for the last few years, and has finally secured the full-time deal that will enable to him to play in games for the rest of the season + playoffs.
As injuries have plagued the Warriors this season, a number of guys have been thrust into larger roles. Spencer has averaged a career-high 5.8 points per game. He even dropped 20 in the team’s last contest with the Suns.
Rebounds and assists have been up for the third-year guard as well.
Let’s talk about what he’ll bring to the team the rest of the way.
Warriors Guarantee Pat Spencer’s Contract
Due to some salary restrictions, the Warriors had to wait until the last minute to make this decision. But the team has finally given Pat Spencer a guaranteed deal, and he’ll be here the rest of the season. Coming off a night where he set career-highs in points (20) and threes made (6), it’s a good a time as any for this reward to drop.
Jimmy Butler suffering a season-ending injury was the last thing this team could afford, but it was the hand they have been dealt. They have been without Stephen Curry for the last two, and three of the past five games, as well. As it currently stands, this team is the #8 seed, three games away from any kind of movement up in the standings.
Spencer brings floor-spacing and playmaking to the floor. Originally just a feel-good story, he’s not cementing himself as a key piece on a playoff team.
Here’s what he had to say on his time in Golden State two days ago, prior to the standard deal being signed:
“We’ve got some phone calls to make here,” Spencer said after the game. “Business is business. We’ll figure it out. But I’m beyond thankful for this organization and what we’ve been able to do together. I’m thankful they’ve given me an opportunity.”
The best may still be yet to come for Spencer, who is expected to continue to play a large role for this team.
Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga were moved at the deadline for Kristaps Porzingis, who is yet to play. More minutes are available. He should be able to capitalize.
Great Days Ahead for Pat Spencer
For a player like Pat Spencer, opportunities don’t come out of nowhere. He earned his way into the league, and has become a regular contributor to success. He’s become a popular meme of sorts, with social media comedian Henry Marken running a viral spoof series on Spencer having a day job to support himself.
Funnily enough, Spencer himself even appeared in one of them, which you can watch here. A player that has cultivated a legitimate following, it’s clear Golden State fans have enjoyed watching the 29-year-old.
Plenty more threes and assists will come from #61. Continued productivity is on the way.
