Liverpool have a number of contract issues to sort out within the next 18 months

Liverpool are planning to offer Andy Robertson a new contract of up to two years as they are keen to retain the services of the Scotland captain due to his leadership qualities.

The former Hull City left-back joined the Reds from the East Yorkshire club back in 2017 for just £8m. His current deal with the Reds will expire at the end of the season.

A report from TEAMtalk has claimed that Liverpool want to offer Robertson a new contract and stop him from leaving the club in the summer. It comes after a deal was almost agreed for him to join Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in January.

His contract situation means clubs outside of England are free to approach him about signing a pre-contract. Celtic have reportedly already made this move as they look to secure Robertson on a free transfer.

The Scottish Premiership giants are currently third in the top-flight in Scotland but are still in the Europa League.

Robertson’s minutes at Liverpool have been reduced this season after the £45m signing of Milos Kerkez in the summer.

Speaking about Robertson back in September, Kerkez was asked what his relationship with the Scot was like and said: "Really good.

"Before the game (on Saturday) he motivated me, told me: 'Go outside and do your thing that you were doing last season' so he gave me a bit of a push.

"Then after the game he congratulated me and told me that I should keep going like that. We are good.

"He's a legend who did amazing things, won everything and still has quality. It's not like he's not here. He's a squad player. This is Liverpool, we're competing.

"He's pushing me, I'm pushing him and I think that's important to have in a big club like this."

Liverpool handed two-year deals to both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk last season to keep the pair under contract until 2027. With Robertson set to turn 32 in March, a two-year contract extension would be in keeping with the pattern from last year.

Van Dijk and Salah were both handed huge wage increases but that is not something that will likely be on the table for Robertson given his reduced influence this season.

Speaking about his future last month, Robertson said: “We’ve had chats now which will remain private; we’ll see what happens.

“I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that. I’ll sit down with my family and decide.

“After a stressful summer, I’m just trying to enjoy being a part of it, and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we’ve managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family wants.”
