Liverpool signed Jeremy Jacquet on deadline day with the Frenchman to join Liverpool in the summer
Liverpool signing Jeremy Jacquet suffered a ‘serious’ injury on Saturday as Rennes lost 3-1 to Lens in Ligue 1.
The Reds signed the French defender on deadline day as he travelled to Merseyside to undergo a medical and finalise a £55m move earlier this week. He will join the club in the summer once the current season has come to a close.
He was back in action for Rennes on Saturday but was forced off in the 69th minute with a shoulder injury. Lens were down to 10 men and winning 2-1 but would go on to score a third goal despite being a man down after Jacquet had been forced off.
Jacquet looked in a lot of pain and had to be helped off the pitch while his shoulder was supported.
“For Jeremy, it's his shoulder,” Rennes boss Habib Beye confirmed afterwards.
Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal was also forced off during the game, as Beye added on the injuries: “We'll have time to see, but it's definitely quite serious for both of them.”
Jacquet had exerted his influence on the game before being forced off as he 43 touches and making six clearances and four headed clearances. He also produced five accurate long balls in six attempts.
He has made 19 appearances in Ligue 1 for Rennes this season but it’s now unclear how many more games he will have as Liverpool will watch on nervously for a diagnosis on the player’s injury.
Speaking after signing for Liverpool, Jacquet had expressed determination to finish the season on a high with Rennes.
"I am honoured to sign for Liverpool, one of the greatest football institutions in the world,” he said.
"It was also very important for me to finish my time in red and black on a high, at my boyhood club, the club of my heart.
"I'm approaching this second half of the season with the desire to experience some great moments with my teammates and the fans."
Speaking about the signing of the Frenchman, Reds boss Arne Slot said: “Very pleasing, of course, because first of all he is a very big talent – and maybe even more than ‘only’ a talent, but we speak about talent because of his age, of course.
“Second of all because we weren’t the only one interested in him, so another big compliment for the people that are working every single day so hard to sign players, that we were able to sign such a big talent.
“And [it is] another example of the model we are using at this club: so, young, very talented players, sometimes in the start of their career, sometimes already a little bit a few years into their career, but always players that are young and can improve us and help us for the short, but definitely also for the long term.
“We have signed a lot of them recently and I’ve said many times that the mid- to long-term, but even the short-term, future of this club is in a very, very, very good place.”
